Back to Fleetwood Flicks! Movie: 50 First Dates (2004) Director: Peter Segal Players: Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore Grade: B+ About a year ago I heard that Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore were hooking up to make another movie together (their first being The Wedding Singer). I was curious to see what the story would be. Then I saw the awful preview for 50 First Dates. I have been avoiding seeing this film ever since. However, lately there has been a lack of interesting movies being released and so the number of choices grows rather small. I went into this movie with very low expectations. The preview looked so bad. It was chock full of Sandler’s usual stupid potty jokes, broken story plots, and silly characters. It takes a while for the movie to get interesting. I was still having doubts during the opening scenes. Sandler was using bad joke after bad joke. The script was poorly written, and I was already preparing myself to write a bad review. Then, all of a sudden, the plot starts to develop a heart, and sarcasm isn’t at the root of every sentence. The sparkling Drew Barrymore enters the movie, looking better than she ever has in my opinion. The audience gets to see Sandler act slightly more grown up than he has in some of his other films. I started to enjoy myself very much. The movie kept getting better and better. The supporting cast is amazing. Sean Astin is absolutely hilarious! Rob Schneider plays a good character as well. He normally plays the irresponsible idiot in Sandler’s movies. While in this film, he’s still somewhat of an idiot, but a respectful and responsible one. Sandler’s connection to animals in the film is a very nice touch as well. I especially appreciate the homage to Happy Gilmore and Tommy Boy. This is a very cute and romantic film (as well as a funny one)! Random movie quote: “God gave men brains larger than dogs’ so they wouldn’t hump women’s legs at cocktail parties.” –From Hackers starring Angelina Jolie. Movie Vault Recommendation: : In light of the upcoming Academy Awards (Sunday, 2/29), I encourage you to embrace a slew of former Oscar winners. Go crazy with it! Oscars are a time of celebration! One Oscar-winning movie I recommend to you all is: Forrest Gump (Best Picture winner of 1994). “I’m not a smart man, but I know what love is.” Aw…
