61st Annual Golden Globes

January 25, 2004 - 7:12 pm

The Golden Globes are less than two hours away. All my updating about winter break activities is just going to have to wait until later. So, without further ado, here are my picks for the 61st Annual Golden Globes.

Best Motion Picture - Drama

Nominees:
Cold Mountain
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Master and Commander
Mystic River
Seabiscuit

My Pick: This one is extremely tough, because I don't feel extremely passionate about any of these films. I'm going to have to say Lord of the Rings though. It is by far the best film among these five. I enjoyed Seabiscuit and Mystic River very much though, and I won't be unhappy if they win. I will, however, be unhappy if Master and Commander wins. I absolutely hate Russell Crowe. He makes me sick. I don't want Cold Mountain to win either, because LOTR (and SB and MR) are obviously better movies. It would be silly for Cold Mountain to win.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama

Nominees:
Cate Blanchett (Veronica Guerin)
Nicole Kidman (Cold Mountain)
Scarlett Johansson (Girl with a Pearl Earring)
Charlize Theron (Monster)
Uma Thurman (Kill Bill - Vol.1)
Evan Rachel Wood (Thirteen)

My Pick: Charlize Theron for Monster. Hands-down, Theron's performance was one of the best I've seen in a really long time. I cannot even describe in words how amazing she was. She had everything about her character perfected. I think that Uma Thurman and Evan Rachel Wood were really good in their respective films, however, no one in this category could come close to Charlize Theron. She deserves this award and if she doesn't win, then it just goes to prove how stupid the Hollywood Foreign Press people are.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama

Nominees:
Russell Crowe (Master and Commander)
Tom Cruise (The Last Samurai)
Ben Kingsley (House of Sand and Fog)
Jude Law (Cold Mountain)
Sean Penn (Mystic River)

My Pick: I unfortunately haven't seen House of Sand and Fog. I've heard amazing things about it, so Ben Kingsley may very well deserve this award. My pick has to be for Tom Cruise though. I really really liked The Last Samurai. I thought Tom's performance was brilliant. In terms of acting, I think this is his best film. Tom makes the movie. It's films like these that let you really understand how talented some actors can be, even if it is a big star. I will be very mad if Russell Crowe wins. Yuck Yuck Yuck!

Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy

Nominees:
Bend it Like Beckham
Big Fish
Finding Nemo
Lost in Translation
Love Actually

My Pick: This is a tough one. I liked every single movie in this category. While I can't say that I absolutely liked Lost in Translation more, it is my pick. It's one of those movies that you just know you're watching something unique and special. The direction and actors were really wonderful, and it should definitely win this award. I will not be upset if Finding Nemo wins though. That movie was SO much fun! Ellen Degeneres was absolutely wonderful too. Why wasn't she nominated!!!??? C'mon. I don't really want Love Actually to win (and I don't think it will). It is good, but it's not extremely original. And it's not extremely spectacular. The characters do not seem too much of a stretch for the actors. That goes for Bend it Like Beckham as well. Good movie, but not extremely outstanding. Big Fish was really good too. If I didn't have issues with Tim Burton's style, I'd probably pick it.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy

Nominees:
Jamie Lee Curtis (Freaky Friday)
Scarlett Johansson (Lost in Translation)
Diane Keaton (Something's Gotta Give)
Diane Lane (Under the Tuscan Sun)
Helen Mirren (Calendar Girls)

My Pick: There is only one performance that is truly unique here. I'll give you one guess. Scarlett Johansson. She was really amazing in Lost in Translation. It's hard to describe, but you can feel it when you watch her. She deserves to win at least one award tonight, and it needs to be this category (and not take Charlize's globe away). I really like Diane Keaton too. I feel that her role was different only in the sense that Diane is getting older herself, so it's natural that she starts playing a middle aged woman. I feel that she portrayed the emotions of her character really well, even if the story wasn't really believable.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy

Nominees:
Jack Black (School of Rock)
Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean)
Bill Murray (Lost in Translation)
Jack Nicholson (Something's Gotta Give)
Billy Bob Thornton (Bad Santa)

My Pick: Bill Murray. No explanation needed. No one compares. No one.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture

Nominees:
Maria Bello (The Cooler)
Patricia Clarkson (Pieces of April)
Hope Davis (American Splendor)
Holly Hunter (Thirteen)
Renee Zellweger (Cold Mountain)

My Pick: As much as I hate to admit this, my pick is Renee Zellweger. I didn't like Cold Mountain and I don't like Renee Zellweger normally. However, she pulled off her character in the midst of a bad script and bad plot. However, I don't feel extremely strong about this category, so I ultimately don't care. I'd be happy if Maria Bello won. I didn't get the chance to see The Cooler, but she's a great actress who doesn't get recognized enough.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture

Nominees:
Alec Baldwin (The Cooler)
Albert Finney (Big Fish)
William H. Macy (Seabiscuit)
Tim Robbins (Mystic River)
Peter Sarsgaard (Shattered Glass)
Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai)

My Pick: Peter Sarsgaard. Shattered Glass was amazing, and not only because of my honey Hayden Christensen, but because of this AMAZING actor (Sarsgaard). Wow. Just thinking about his character in the movie gives me goosebumps, because he was SO good. I don't really think he has a big chance of winning, but it makes me happy that at least the Foreign Press nominated him. At least he got recognized. I will be upset if he doesn't win, but I'm not really expecting him to win. Tim Robbins was really good too. He would be the only one I wouldn't be extremely upset about. I'd still be disappointed of course, because I REALLY REALLY want Peter to win, like really really bad.

Best Director - Motion Director

Nominees:
Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation)
Clint Eastwood (Mystic River)
Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings)
Anthony Minghella (Cold Mountain)
Peter Weir (Master and Commander)

I'm not very passionate about the television nominations. I really want Sex and the City to sweep the tv awards tonight. I want it to win best show; I want Sarah Jessica Parker to win best actress; all three of the other women are nominated in the best supporting category. I'd really like Kristen Davis to win, but ultimately, I just want one of them to win. And of course, I want all of Hallmark's movies to win in those tv categories. Go Sex and the City and Hallmark!!!
