What a year!

- Three words: NEW. YORK. NIGHTLIFE.
I first have to say that I credit my new social life to my wonderful friends: Blake, Cherish,
Courtnie, Brandon & Ernest. I'm so grateful that I was roommates with Cherish my senior year,
because it allowed us to meet and consequently allowed me to meet everyone else. My
friends really like to go out to bars and clubs on the weekends. In high school I used to be
a big partier, and I loved it! Although I went out in college a little, I definitely didn't
party like I used to (or like I am now). I take responsibility for that partly, because
I was content with either staying in or going out for dinner and/or a movie. However, I
think a big part of the reason I didn't go out much was because the people I chose to be around
didn't like to go out at all (and one person was downright anti-social). So, after graduation
I decided it was about time to act my age and have some fun. So I started to go out a little. I definitely
enjoyed myself. Then after I broke up with my friend in August, I started to go out even
more since I had more free time on the weekends. I cannot even describe how fun and exciting
NY nightlife is. Each club is different and has it's own personality. But there is one place
that has sort of become our hotspot.
CROBAR! I
absolutely, positively LOVE Crobar! My friends
and I never go to a place unless it's free to get in. Crobar is usually expensive, but we
know a few people that work there, so admission is never a problem. And usually we are on the
VIP list. On Fridays Crobar has open bar from 10 - 11:30 pm. So not only do we get in for
free (and have access to the VIP room), but we can drink for free. That's not even the reason
I love the place though. When I go out, I like to dance, and Crobar is always a sure thing.
One of their rooms plays a mix of hip hop and 80s music. They play really good 80s too, like
some Michael and Bon Jovi. I just know that when I go to Crobar I'm going to have a good
time.
- I started working at NYU's gym (Coles)
When I started my diet I knew that I was going to have to increase my activity level. I
looked into getting an alumni membership through NYU. I would be able to use both of their
gym facilities. The membership is $500 for a school year, which I couldn't afford. I
checked out a few other places like Bally's and Gold's, but they were
a lot more than the
NYU alumni price. I tried to figure out a way to come up with the $500. I even considered
asking my family for help, which I don't like to do. Then it occurred to me that I could
ask Gail for some advice. Gail is the Assistant Athletic Director of NYU (and was my 'boss'
when I was involved with the mascot team). You could say that she and I are pretty close. We
ended up meeting for lunch one day, and I asked her if there was anyway she could get me a
discount. She said she had an even better plan. She would give me a job at Coles, and thus
I'd be able to use the gym for free whenever I wanted! It was so generous and kind of her
to help me like that. It's a really good set up, because I only work a couple hours a week.
It doesn't interfere with anything, and they pay me!
- I joined a volleyball team!
I really, really enjoy playing volleyball. I played each year in junior high and high school.
I even played a little my freshman year at college. It's just incredibly fun. So, one day at
work I received an email from Sabrina about Hallmark's volleyball team revival. She was trying
to get people in the office excited about it, and consequently, trying to get more people to join. I
immediately replied and said I was in. We started practicing a bit after work in Central Park
and at various high schools. After our games started, the practices ceased though. We've been
playing once a week since September. The new season just started. I enjoy myself immensely. It
gives me a chance to get to know some of Hallmark's employees that I don't work with directly.
Our team is called the Reel Team. Clever, right!
- My mom discovered she had another malignant tumor
This whole subject makes me angry, due to my mother's stubbornness. Anyways, my mom had a mole
on her toe that had been bothering her, so she went and had it looked at. The results came back,
and it was cancer. Luckily the doctor had cut out all the cancerous cells when he removed it, so nothing
more needed to be done. However, I insisted that my mother needed to get a full body scan. She
hasn't had one for SEVERAL years, and since a cancerous tumor was randomly discovered, I really
thought it was the only kind of approach to take. Well, my mother didn't agree with me. She
thought (and still thinks) that everything is fine since the cancer had been removed from her toe.
When she had cancer before, it was on her arm. And now it was on her toe. I just find it very
hard to believe that these are coincidences. Who knows where another cancerous tumor could be
lurking, especially because your toes are no where near your arms. Her doctor didn't even think
it was necessary to have a complete scan, which, of course, completely makes me think a lot less
of her "wonderful" cancer specialist. Mom's toes are almost never exposed to sunlight, which was
the supposed cause of her cancer before, so how could this new tumor be caused by that? It just
makes me angry. My mom is stubborn. She hates to go to the doctor (like me). We don't go to the
doctor unless we're dying. And a full body scan is very expensive. I know my mom doesn't have
the money just lying around to pay for it, but there are ways to get around that. I would help if
she'd let me. I'm sure that Grandma and Grandpa would help. And the rest of the family would help
if needed too. SHE NEEDS TO HAVE THIS DONE. Here is her email address: connief@iowatelecom.net
If you agree with me, then email her and tell her how badly she needs to do this! My fear is that
she will wake up one day and be infested be cancerous tumors. Then it will be too late to do
anything.
