Hair or Lack There Of

January 23, 2003 - 8:46 pm

Fabulous day yesterday, just fabulous. Wednesday is my day off (as well as most of the people in my building). Anyways, Sara and I made plans to go grocery shopping together. Grocery shopping here is fun, because it's still a bit of a mystery. I don't know if I'll find something new. Given, the groceries here are a bit different than they are back home, but I've found the things that I like. I've gone grocery shopping 3 or 4 times already. There are five of us sharing a frig, so we can't fit that much in it all at the same time. Anyways, about grocery shopping...the quantities are so much smaller here. The largest jug of milk is 6 liters, and the container is weird shaped. But it doesn't seem to be that expensive, so I guess I don't mind. I've been buying a lot of cereal. I practically live on cereal. That's pretty much all I eat here. I've been buying frosted flakes. They're called 'Frosties' here though. I experimented with buying some ground beef, it was only 85 pence by the way for a single serving. I didn't think that was too expensive. Anyways, I had to buy some cheese to go with it, because I can't eat just a hamburger. The sliced cheese wasn't that much either, only 47 pence. Well, the meat tasted a little different, and the cheese was so different. The cheese was so rich, I could hardly eat the whole thing. I don't know if I'll be buying this stuff again. I bought some bread yesterday, and tried to make some garlic bread. However, the bread here is like rubber or something, it's absolutely horrible. Yuck yuck. I bought these tiny cans of coke. They are absolutely adorable. The coke here tastes different, because it's made with sugar instead of corn syrup. I don't drink that much of it though. I've been mostly drinking our tap water, which is strangely good, and apple juice. I go through stages on which juice I like. For one stage, I'll only like apple juice, then another time period I'll only like orange juice. I guess I'm on an apple juice kick right now.

Anyways, on with how fabulous yesterday was...after we got back from the grocery store, Sara said she needed to get her hair cut. I said I would go along with her and keep her company. When I got there, they asked me if I wanted my hair cut. On an impulse, I said ok. So...I got my hair basically chopped off. It's SOOO short. Let's just say that the area of hair that I'm trying to regrow out was even cut a little. It's just a little longer than ear length. I like it though, it's just so short. It's much easier to manage, and I really like that. I was so frustrated with it because of my 'spot' of short hair. It's almost even now, almost. I'm sure by the time I leave London, it'll definitely be even. I'm hoping it will be anyways.

After the hair cutting, Sara and I went to Oxford Street, which is like a mix of Bleeker Street and Fifth Avenue. It was so much fun. We went to a bunch of neat little shops. I really wanted to find some stationary, but then I got paranoid about my money AGAIN, so I didn't buy a single thing. We ended up eating at McDonalds for dinner, which I was so excited about. It was the first McDonalds I'd seen here, and I really wanted to see what it was like. Ok, so did I mention the quantities are much smaller here. I ordered the chicken mcnugget value meal (which was way more costly than I had imagined it would be). The fries that came with the meal were what a children's size would be back home, as well as my soda. It was disappointing. Sara didn't actually eat at McDonalds. She's a vegetarian, so she picked up some weird sandwiches at a take away deli.

After that, we went back to campus to check our email. I got several emails. I got an email from Frank, from Nancy, from Asha, from my mom, and a few others that I can't remember off the top of my head. Then, the best thing ever happened. Melissa logged onto AIM. It made me so happy, my eyes actually watered. I didn't realize how much I missed her until I started talking to her. She told me about her recent Rob Zombie dream (SOOOO fucking funny, I was literally laughing very loudly).

I've actually got to chat with several of my friends. The other day I got to talk with my friend Damian. He was still in Puerto Rico. It was his last day at home. Then the day after that, I got to talk to my friend Aaron. It was really nice semi-catching up with these guys.

I finally got my internet banking thingy figured out. Now, I don't have to wait for my mom to call the bank, and then relay the information back to me. I can just come to the computer lab anytime I want and check my balance. SOOO conveinent.

Well, I should get back to my building. I started my laundry a while ago, and I know it's done. Doing laundry here is very different too. At least it's free. Actually, my building is the only one that has free laundry. The other students have to either go somewhere else (because their building doesn't have any washing facilities) or they have to pay a ridiculous amount. Each small load is 2 pounds, and then then dryer is the same, but you have to keep it in the dryer for quite some time since one time around doesn't get the clothes completely dry. I have heard that the British don't really believe in dryers, so most of them are complete crap, even new ones. Here, I guess, people hang their clothes up and that using a dryer isn't really common. Weird Brits.
