Compliments and More Fiennes!

March 14, 2003 - 3:09 pm

Time for something new. I should start off by mentioning that my apartment was semi-robbed this past Tuesday. My roommate, Sara, had a little over $300 stolen out of her dresser. That was the only thing stolen. She handled it really well. We immediately went over to the manager's office and reported what happened. They told us we needed to go to the police station and fill out a report. I went with Sara to the police station. The lady cop was really nice about everything. She took Sara's information and then told us that she'd be sending some cops over to our apartment to get fingerprints. Ok, so we were both a little shocked that cops were taking this so seriously. This would have never happened in the states. The cops would have just filled a report, and sent us on our way. Very interesting. Two cops did, in fact, come over to our apartment later that night. They didn't take fingerprints though. One of them just looked around our room while the other one gave us a friendly lecture of the do's and don't's of hiding your money. He said that we should complain to NYU about how bad our security is, and that we'll probably get a lot of thefts towards the end of the semester. Off they went. The next morning Sara and I were awoken because yet another cop decided to drop by. It was around 10 am. This cop didn't do much either, just talk to us. Again, very interesting. Later that night Sara and I were outside just hanging out, and out of nowhere she said "Tonya, thank you for being so GREAT." She put much emphasis on the 'great.' It made me feel really good, because I hadn't really forced myself to be there for her. It was just my nature. She was so grateful. What a nice compliment! Awww...

Another great compliment occurred this past Tuesday morning in my Shakespeare class. I wasn't feeling all that well, so I didn't feel like verbally participating in class. We were talking about 'The Tempest' (the play we're reading right now). The male lead in the play is called Prospero and he has a study (called a 'cell') of books and belongings. We were focusing on his character. Our teacher asked the class what other Shakespearian character had a 'cell'. I knew right away what the answer was, but I didn't feel like contributing, so I remained mute. Well, no one knew the answer. So, out of no where, our teacher said "Tonya, you're our expert here, what's the answer?" I, of course, said Friar Lawrence (from 'Romeo + Juliet', hello!). That was SUCH a nice compliment. MADE. ME. FEEL. SO. INCREDIBLE.

Last night I went to see a production of 'The Tempest'. The lead male playing Prospero was Derek Jacobi. He was in "Gladiator" and "Gosford Park" (and also "Basil", but I'm sure most of you won't recognize that film). Another character was played the birdman in "Quills". These actors aren't really big stars (well, that's a matter of opinion for Derek Jacobi), but it was still nice since I, of course, recognized them. However, the big thrill of my evening came after the play commenced. I was walking down the stairs, toward the exit, I see RALPH (pronounced 'Raif') FIENNES!!!! He was standing at the box office. It was such an wonderful moment. I have put a picture of him below. Oh, Ralph Fiennes is the older brother of Joseph Fiennes (the hottie I saw the other night in 'Love's Labour's Lost'). I also posted a picture of Joseph playing Shakespeare. Yep, both brothers in a span of two weeks! Simply amazing!

Some movies that you might (should) recognize him from are: Maid in Manhattan (male lead), Red Dragon (killer), The Quiz Show (the cheater), The English Patient (romantic), and Schindler's List. There are more, but that should give you a good idea. I think I've mentioned this before, but I am going to Stratford May 2 to see a play called "Brand", which stars this wonderful actor. So, hopefully I'll get to meet him then. Wow, I saw him last night...wow wow...I love just randomly seeing famous people, it makes it more special if it's random.

Well, that's all for now. Talk to you again soon!
