Real World, Update 2 of 3

July 7, 2004 - 4:34 pm

Previous, Real World, Update 1

When we went back to pick up the truck, Grandpa had gotten two parking tickets. He should have listened to me.

The day after graduation was another work-on-my-apartment day. While Duane and Grandpa continued to work at my new apartment, we girls spent the day at my dorm packing up some stuff and just hanging out. It was fun! That night we went to Applebee's for my graduation dinner. I wanted to go to someplace unique and special, but my family is too picky (like me), and so I decided that Applebees would have something that everyone would like. It was a really nice dinner, very delicious.

The next morning I had a mascot event to do, so Duane and Grandpa planned to take a drive upstate to see an old friend that lived in Hudson, NY. Mom, Bonnie and Grandma stayed at my dorm while I did my last mascot event ever. All four members of the team were at the event, so it was nice getting to work with everyone. It also rained really hard that morning, so that an an excellent bonus. Afterwards, I went back to my dorm to get ready for Grad Alley (a festival NYU puts on every year for its graduating students). I've gone as a mascot every year, so I was excited to finally be a guest. I really only wanted to get my picture taken with the bobcat and let Mom, Bonnie and Grandma enjoy everything else. We got there about an hour after it started, and I couldn't find the bobcat anywhere. There were even supposed to be two mascots there. I went to one of our regular changing places and Barbara and Amanda were there. They said that Gail had told them they could leave. I still hadn't confirmed that Matt and Gail had left yet. Finally, I ran into them and they were still taking pictures with the crowd. Gail took lots of pictures of me, the bobcat (Matt), and my family. It was great. Duane and Grandpa were supposed to be back in time to go to Grad Alley with us, but they didn't make it. They met us at Caliente after the festival was over. Everyone, except my grandparents, got a drink. However, they tried all of our very strong drinks. It was a lot of fun!

The next day was NYU's all university commencement in Washington Square Park. There was some minor drama in the morning with parking, but everything eventually smoothed out. There were so many people there. Duane and Grandpa never sat down. Duane videotaped a large portion of it, and the highlight of his day was meeting Bill Cosby (an NYU alumni that came to the ceremony). It was a very hot day and I was sitting directly in the sun. I got a burnt a little. I was disappointed that no one famous spoke at the graduation. I figured that would happen. The year that I graduate, NYU couldn't get anyone interesting. Oh well. After the ceremony and after I'd returned my cap and gown, we went back to my dorm to move the final boxes into my new apartment. While we were in my room, Cherish came home. She had been to her school's reception and had a bit too much wine. She was hilarious (and VERY drunk). She was just picking up some things before she went to her new apartment. She could hardly stand up though, so I helped her down to Courtnie's car. Duane did too. My family found the whole thing very amusing (in a good way). There's never a reason to be embarrassed in front of my family. They always just go with the situation. I love them!

So the rest of the day consisted of driving from my dorm to my new apartment a couple times, and then a bunch of unpacking. My family was leaving that night. Well, they were technically leaving their hotel the next morning, but they weren't going to come back into the city. I really REALLY didn't want them to go. It was a lot harder this time for me than normal. My mom and grandma are usually the bawl babies, but not this time. It is so much easier to leave than to watch someone else go. And I had to say goodbye to not just one person, but five of my most favorite people. It was very difficult.

I met up with Cherish and Blake later that night at Carlyle. I still had to officially turn in my keys and check out. That was weird. I'd been living there for the past three years, and I was sad to be leaving such a great place and great location. That night was my first night staying at the new apartment. It was quite surreal. It didn't feel like home yet. Friday was spent mostly putting stuff away and getting used to the apartment (and not living with my friends).
