Spring Break!

April 05, 2003 - 4:31 pm

Now that my spring break is coming to a close, and people are starting to come back from their marvelous trips, my boredom is finally beginning to subside. My week without my new friends wasn't totally wasted though. Last Saturday evening I went to the movies with a guy I sort of like. Although is wasn't technically a date, it really felt like one. I didn't want to look like I'd spent time trying to look nice, so I tried not to change my appearance too drastically from the way I'd looked earlier in the day. When I was finished getting ready though, I went to talk to my suitemate, Joanne, and she began to say something, but stopped mid-sentence, and said "wow, you look really pretty." I wasn't expecting it, because I NEVER get compliments like that. But of course it made me feel good (it made me feel really good actually). The movie we saw was 'The Recruit'. Good movie.

Last Sunday my friend Christina invited me to go to Greenwich with her and her roommate (Kelly). Greenwich is a small town outside of London. I had a really good time. We walked on the foot path (which is under the Thames River), shopped around at the cute antique and food markets, and we got supremely lovely pie. At one of the markets, I bought some super moist, super tasty banana bread. MMMM, yummy! I also bought a little duck and this adorable little dog trinket box. We had lunch in a mexican cafe (but only because it had other kinds of foods as well). We went to the Old Royal Observatory, which is atop a very steep hill (aka NOT fun to walk). It was neat though, because that's where the prime meridian of the world is (we all stood on it, so neat). The prime meridian is what every time zone is based on. After meridian-ing, we decided to sit on the extremely steep hill for a while. It was a beautiful view. Then we went back to London.

Last Tuesday, Christina and Kelly invited me to go see 'The Age of Innocence' with them. It's an older movie that was playing at the Prince Charles Cinema. We decided to meet a little early so we could have dinner first. We went to a chinese restaurant in Chinatown. It was a very odd restaurant, because they made every customer that wasn't Asian sit downstairs. I didn't really mind, but it was interesting to have segregated seating. It was actually kind of funny. As soon as we sat down at our table, the waitress took our chopsticks away. I guess she assumed we wouldn't attempt to eat with them. The food was really good though. We went to Starbucks afterwards for some hot chocolate and coffee. Yum!!! Christina told me to try raspberry syrup in my hot chocolate, so I did. SO GOOOOOD!!!! Then off to the movie...good movie, even though I'm not a fan of Daniel Day-Lewis or Winona Ryder. Michelle Pfiefer's hair was really horrid too, but it was still an all right flick. Miriam Margoyles was in it, so I was satisfied. She was the nurse in 'Romeo + Juliet' (in case you didn't know).

Then on Wednesday night, Christina had a spare ticket to a play, so she invited me to come along. We saw "The Woman in Black" at the Fortune Theater in Covent Garden. It was a really really good show. SOOOOO scary! It was about a man who was haunted by the ghost of a crazy woman. Again, SOOOOO scary! I had a blast. After the show, we talked about our favorite scary movies. Christina is a cinema studies major, so we have the best conversations. She actually knows just as much as me (and more) about movies. And better yet, she LIKES talking about movies and actors and all that jazz. It's really nice to find someone that I can have a real conversation with about something I'm so passionate about. So great!

Over the course of the week, I went to several movies on my own. I won't overly elaborate on them, because there are too many. I saw 'The Core', which I expected to be REALLY bad, but was surprisingly good. The special effects were simply amazing. I actually only wanted to see it for the special effects. I wanted to see The Collesium explode. I wanted to see the Golden Gate Bridge melt. It had a pretty good cast. DJ Qualls was in it, and I hadn't known he was going to be in it, so it was a nice surprise. I saw 'Blue Crush'. It was a fun movie with a cute romantic twist, and the ending wasn't ruined with absolute victory either. I saw 'A Man Apart' starring Vin Diesel. This isn't a movie that I would normally go see, but I sort of have slim-pickings here. It was an all right movie. It wasn't bad, just not that great. Lots of guns, lots of anger, not enough sadness. I saw 'The Rules of Attraction' for a third time. OH. MY. GAWD. I LOOOOOVVVVVEEEEE this movie SOOOO much. I've been counting down the days for it to open here ever since I got to London. I think this movie has unofficially nabbed the #4 slot of my all-time favorite movies. I really hope it stays in the theaters a while, because I have to see it a million more times. After watching it for the third time, I decided I HAD to buy the soundtrack, so I did. I bought the soundtrack to 'Life as a House' as well.

My suitemate, Tanya, got back from the Canary Islands Thursday. Last night her NYC roommates (who are in a band) had a show here in London, so she invited me to come along with her. It was the first time that Tanya and I had gone out together. It was just the two of us too. So nice! It was at this bar called Dublin Castle in Camden Town. I ran out of money like 5 minutes into the evening, so I had to bum about 20 pounds off of Tanya. I hate doing that, but she was really sweet about it. Her roommates are two of the coolest and most fun guys I have met in a really long time. Their names are Chris and Beans (well, 'Beans' is just a nickname, Michael is his real name). I had SOOOO much fun. I hadn't eaten any dinner either, so I got drunk on two beers. The bar had Budweiser too, so I was in heaven. I didn't stop with the two beers though (duh). I was very drunk by the time Tanya wanted to leave. She had a headache and was really hungry. We got a cab and she told the driver to take us to the McDonalds on Tottenham Court Rd. (the one that I previously got thrown out of, hehe). Then we walked back to our building with severe pee-cramps and supremely aching feet (obviously the wrong choice of shoes).

So, that's pretty much my whole spring break. It went a lot better than I thought it would. I thought I'd be bored out of my mind, but I was only bored a little I guess. Thank goodness for Christina or I would have gone crazy!

GUESS WHAT!!!! This is so exciting! I booked a flight for Barcelona!! I'm really going to Spain! I'm so happy. Ever since I met that Spanish girl in Paris, I felt like I just HAD to go to Spain. So, I'm going! I'm only going for two days, but the flight is really short. It only takes an hour and a half to get there! YEAH!!! I'M GOING TO SPAIN! I'M GOING TO SPAIN!

Hasta la vista, companeros! No puedo esperar hablar a ustedes una vez mas!
